THE government will introduce a special transition programme aimed at upgrading B1 and B2 class motorcycle driving licences to B class, as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook today.
Speaking at a press conference, Loke revealed that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is in the final stages of preparing for the programme’s rollout, which involves system changes and coordination with driving institutions.
“Applications for the programme are expected to open to the public starting Oct 1.”
The transition programme is designed to facilitate the upgrade process for motorcyclists, allowing those with B1 and B2 licences to transition to B class. This upgrade will enable riders to operate motorcycles exceeding 500cc, compared to the current limit of 250cc for B2 licences.
Moreover, Loke noted that this special transition programme will not have a set end date. It will continue until a specific period is determined and announced in the future, providing flexibility for those wishing to upgrade their licences.
The announcement follows a proposal made last August by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who suggested the automatic upgrade of B2 class motorcycle driving licences to B class. – Aug 2, 2024
