GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak (GPS) prominent leader and Sarawak’s Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has issued a strong warning to PKR, advising them against participating in the next Sarawak state election.
At a press conference held today, Karim expressed concern that PKR’s involvement in the state election could destabilise the current coalition government. He pointed out the need to preserve the existing political balance.
“Disrupting this current situation is unnecessary. Just leave it as it is. You do it that way. We will reciprocate that way also.
“Given our current unity government status, there is no point in challenging this balance,” news portal New Straits Times quoted him as saying today.
Karim’s remarks highlighted the delicate balance within Malaysia’s federal coalition government, which was formed after no single party secured a majority in the 15th General Election (GE15).
The coalition comprising Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional (BN), GPS, and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, appointed PKR chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.
Despite being allies at the federal level, GPS controls the Sarawak administration while DAP remains in opposition. Karim argued that PKR’s participation in the state election could disrupt the current unity within the coalition government, stressing that such disruption would be counterproductive.
“At present, the Sarawak state assembly comprises 82 seats, with only two held by the opposition, both from DAP.
“PKR holds no seats in the assembly, so it is best that it remains the same in future state elections,” he said.
Furthermore, PSB was dissolved in March 2024 with its members joining the Progressive Democratic Party, a component of the GPS coalition. – July 31, 2024
