Grand obsession: A case of sympathisers aplenty believing in Bossku’s innocence

WITH 4.6 million followers on his Facebook account – of which he is revered as the good hearted and very generous Bossku – former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak surely fits the bill as Malaysia’s “social media king” as aptly described by UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Through thick and thin – and even with the long arm of the law having caught up with him with an unfavourable outcome awaiting him in his final SRC International Sdn Bhd appeal that culminates in a 12-year jail term and RM210 mil fine – many of his supporters are still rallying behind him, solemnly believing in his innocence.

In a recent viral video Persatuan Sahabat Ulul Amri Malaysia (PSUAM) has reached out to all Malaysians via  TikTok “to come in droves” to attend its handing over of a Free Najib Memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara on Aug 24 (Wednesday) at 2pm.

“My official letter has been sent to the National Palace and accepted by them; I’ll be submitting my letter to the IGP (Inspector-General of Police) next (probably to authorise the mass gathering),” pointed out the president of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Syed Muhammad Imran Syed Abdul Aziz while reading a prepared text.

“We hope the King will consent to invite the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency) chief commissioner and Attorney-General to show if there was indeed a conflict of interest (in the new evidence that Najib wanted to introduce but was rejected by the Federal Court) or was it purportedly created.

“Najib has been oppressed and unfairly treated left and right … I’m not blaming the judiciary in this matter although it should by right consider Najib’s application to adduce new evidence.”

Recall that Najib had in August last year rejected an attempt by PSUAM to seek a royal pardon for his corruption crimes as he wanted to be tried fairly in court “as it is the only way to clear my name fully”.

“I thank this NGO for caring about me, but I never contacted them and was not informed of their petition to the palace this morning,” the Pekan MP said in his Facebook posting back then.

“I do not want my cases dropped just like that and I do not want any political intervention. I am very confident that I am not guilty. Therefore, why do I need to be pardoned if I am not guilty?” he added.

Regardless if Najib is aware of PSUAM once again rallying behind him, Syed Muhammad Imran called on all layers of the society – including youths and youngsters who are aligned to Bossku – to rally alongside the NGO.

“To all the mothers and fathers as well as FELDA settlers who are indebted to Najib vis-à-vis his generosity, we need your presence … whether you ride a bicycle or walk … the most important thing is that you make your way to the National Palace on Aug 24,” he noted.

“For members of the police force and civil servants who are now occupying the PPA1M (1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme) homes of which were Najib’s brainchild, please attend … your salary was raised by Najib (during his tenure as prime minister).”

Elsewhere, Syed Muhammad Imran also reminded those who benefitted from “every scoop of rice purchased by the BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia money)” as well as to all UMNO leaders and members to “not be a hero only on social media or frog under a coconut shell but kindly be present to showcase your loyalty to Najib”.

“We are steadfast and would not budge even by an inch should lightning and thunderstorm strike. We also call on all Malay sultans to be present to accept our memorandum,” he appealed.

“This is our last resort; should Najib go to jail, I believe Malaysia will be on the path of destruction and as a UMNO member, I will be the first to leave the party.” – Aug 19, 2022
