OPPOSITION leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s resignation, citing public anger over the Urban Renewal Act (URA) and the planned visit of former US president Donald Trump to Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking at an opposition-led rally attended by thousands, Hamzah accused Anwar of prioritising developers’ interests under the URA while ignoring ordinary citizens’ land rights.
“Anwar, don’t fight just for the interests of developers,” he said, adding that their struggle wasn’t just for one race, but for all the people, and for justice.
He reminded Anwar of his reformist past, saying “Enough is enough. Step down, Anwar.”
Hamzah also claimed that government lawmakers, including those from UMNO and PKR, had expressed support for rejecting the URA.
“We, the opposition MPs, have rejected this from the very beginning. Not only the opposition, even some UMNO MPs stood with us. There are also PKR members who joined in,” he said.
Yesterday, UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki welcomed the government’s decision to postpone the tabling of the Urban Renewal Act (URA) following
UMNO’s demand for a major review.
He said the current draft of the URA appeared too developer-centric and must be reoriented to focus on people’s welfare.
Asyraf, who also chairs MARA, urged that the revised bill take into account the voices of long-time property owners, cultural and environmental factors, community balance, and state powers over land.
Resolutions made during UMNO’s Urban Renewal Convention called for a people-first framework in redevelopment policies.
Meanwhile, Hamza also condemned the government’s invitation to Trump, whom he blamed for US complicity in Israel’s actions in Gaza. The government defended the invitation, citing Malaysia’s role as Asean chair. —Oct 5, 2025
