WAWASAN president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said the party intends to defend its current state seats in the upcoming Melaka state election, arguing that WAWASAN should have the same opportunity as UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to retain previously won constituencies.
Hamzah noted that the two opposition-held seats in Melaka are represented by WAWASAN members and questioned why the party should not be allowed to defend them if other coalition partners are doing the same.
“Both of those Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats, or the former opposition assemblymen who held them, are WAWASAN members.
“So if UMNO says it wants to defend the seats it won, why shouldn’t I be allowed to defend the seats that we won?” he said after chairing a WAWASAN Supreme Council meeting on Saturday.
He said WAWASAN remains open to negotiations with BN over seat allocations and possible swaps, provided discussions focus on constituencies that can strengthen the coalition’s chances of victory.
Hamzah also dismissed speculation that WAWASAN would contest only the Paya Rumput seat, refusing to confirm how many constituencies the party plans to contest.
Reports suggesting Paya Rumput could be allocated to WAWASAN have raised questions over the future electoral prospects of former PN assemblymen now aligned with the party.—Oct 18, 2026
