Health Ministry warns of rising infections as MCO sets to expire soon

WITH the movement control order (MCO) scheduled to end on Feb 18, the Health Ministry (MOH) warned that the COVID-19 effective reproduction number (Rt) soared yesterday, which was supported with the rise of daily infection cases.

In a tweet this morning, is director general  said the Rt for Malaysia yesterday was at 0.92, up from the 0.91 a day earlier, and 0.88 on Feb 11.

Rt refers to the average number of people that every new COVID-19 patient may infect at a particular time. Ideally, the Rt for the coronavirus should be below 1.0 to contain the spread of the disease.  

The Rt rate was highest in Melaka yesterday (1.07), followed by Penang (1.06), Kedah (1.04) and Johor (1.01).

Selangor, which has the highest infection rate on a daily basis, recorded an RT of 0.89 while Kuala Lumpur recorded 0.95.

Yesterday, Malaysia reported another 3,499 new infection cases, with five deaths. In total, the nation has 261,805 active cases. – Feb 14, 2021.
