East Coast Expressway jaywalking ends in tragic death of drummer Haziq Ramli

DRUMMER and biker Haziq Ramli, 34, met with a tragic death after the high-powered motorcycle he was riding crashed into a four-wheel drive (4×4) vehicle on the East Coast Expressway (LPT) near Lanchang in Pahang yesterday (April 26).

Initial investigation found that the accident was caused by the negligence of a woman who was crossing the expressway.

The incident occurred when a 4×4 Mitsubishi Triton slowed down in the fast lane of the two-lane LPT expressway to avoid a woman who was crossing the road from the right lane to the left lane of the expressway, apparently to a man who was sitting under a bridge along the expressway.

Watching two dashcam videos that have gone viral online, the pick-up truck was seen flashing its hazard lights while slowing down but the victim whose motorcycle was approaching at the rear at high speed failed to avoid crashing into the four-wheel drive.

Preliminary investigation found that the accident was believed to have occurred after a 35-year-old woman stopped her sport utility vehicle (SUV) she was driving on the shoulder of the expressway before crossing to the other side of the expressway.

Meanwhile, Termerloh District Police chief ACP Mazlan Hassan reportedly said that the accident occurred when the powerful motorcycle ridden by Haziq was on its way from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.

“The driver of the four-wheel drive braked suddenly to avoid hitting the woman. At the same time, a powerful motorcycle came from behind, hitting the back of the four-wheel drive involved,” revealed Mazlan.

“As a result of the collision, the rider involved fell in the right lane of the highway while the motorcycle ridden by the victim was thrown into the back of the four-wheel drive.”

The woman and the passenger of the SUV, a 37-year-old foreign man, were arrested to help with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence. – April 27, 2024
