HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail gave assurances that the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) movement in the country is still under control and the police have an upper hand on the situation.
He said this is because there are sufficient databases to help manage cases such as the attack incident at the Ulu Tiram Police Station, Johor.
“Our database is sufficient to manage such incidents and we have the background of those who are involved in any activity or have been detained under (Special Preventive Measures Act 2012 (SOSMA).
“The police approach is to continue interacting with them to ensure the process of rehabilitation is ongoing and does not pose a threat to the community,” stated Saifuddin at a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters today, which was also attended by the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
Simultaneously, Saifuddin urged the public to refrain from spreading any speculation, while the media was advised to report the incident based on the facts provided by the police.
“I was able to detect some of the writings (of media practitioners) and (I) request (the media) to write according to the facts of the case without having to relate this incident to religion.”
Meanwhile, the incident is having a lot of impact in Singapore.
The nation-state has strongly condemned the attack at Ulu Tiram police station in Johor on Friday (May 17), which led to the deaths of two police officers and injured another.
“We extend our sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured officer a speedy recovery,” Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement.
The ministry, including the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore Consulate General in Johor Baru, is monitoring the situation, the MFA added.
The ministry also advised Singaporeans in or travelling to Malaysia to exercise vigilance and take all necessary precautions to ensure their personal safety. – May 17, 2024
