“Hot air announcement”: Netizens jest over Azmin’s targeted fuel subsidy mechanism

YESTERDAY, the Government announced that it was planning to impose a targeted fuel subsidy programme which would see the affluent paying more for petrol.

In announcing the matter, Senior Minister (International Trade and Industries) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said this was being mulled due to soaring crude oil prices.

“We talked about the review at a special retreat recently and this measure is to ensure the subsidy are enjoyed by the lower-income group.

“Those with BMWs cannot enjoy the same subsidies as those driving Kancils,” Bernama reported the Gombak MP as saying.

However, not everyone was impressed by the announcement and took to social media to voice their scepticism.

“Talk is easy, try implementing it. Each station must have someone checking on CC (credit card) of each vehicles?

Petronas itself have over a thousand stations. Simple case of minister talking out of his own ….” said user Honest Politician.

Echoing his sentiments, user Ustazzorro jested:

Netizen Ganesh MN retorted:

It is to note that Putrajaya has been talking about targeted fuel subsidy to benefit the lower-income group since the time of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s premiership.

At the time, the measure was mulled as crude oil prices skyrocketed at the height of the 2008 global economic crisis, which also saw the Government hiking up petrol prices by 70 sen at one-go.

What about old BMWs?

On that note, several netizens reminded Azmin that not all BMW car owner are rich considering many of them purchase the older version of it.

“There are also many retired old men using very old continental cars. How?” asked user Tarista8.

Echoing Tarista8’s argument, user GCTeck stated:
