Hot debate on Twitter after Anwar jokes about student’s phone number

MUDA deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz took offence at Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s joke to a female student. She is asking the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman to apologise for his action.

Anwar did ask for the phone number of a sixth-form student in a recent program saying if he were younger, he would want the student’s number.

Amira claimed that the PM’s actions had set a bad example for the community. She added that this is not the first time Anwar asked for a student’s number during PM meet-student sessions.

Additionally, Amira pointed out that Anwar represents a group that has rank and position.

According to Amira, the Tambun MP’s actions will cause more men to commit such acts.

However, netizens have differing opinions on the issue, with some coming to Anwar’s defence and stating that he did not intend for his statement to be interpreted in the manner portrayed by the MUDA politician.

“Women see this every day and we always have to explain every time we don’t smile or laugh at a ‘joke’. Seeing Anwar do it on a larger scale will keep this faith alive,” she further added in her tweet which had more than 150,000 views at the time of writing.

Furthermore, Anwar jokingly asked for a phone number from a sixth-form student at SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah. The student’s name is Adriana and she asked the PM a question. The video is widely distributed online.

“I am proud of this Adriana. Even the sixth-form student asked such neat questions. If I was young I would have asked for a phone number,” joked Anwar who praised the student in the process.

The PM’s answer received cheers from the students, who were amused rather than distraught. – June 25, 2023
