How smart homes can improve quality of life for senior citizens

AN ageing population has many needs. Technological advancement in the last few decades has altered the concept of homes, allowing for greater convenience for older residents.

The Oxford Dictionary defines smart homes as “a home equipped with lighting, heating, and electronic devices that can be controlled remotely by smartphone or computer”.

With that in mind, smart homes are ideal for senior citizens as they could be customised with the latest gadgets to improve their quality of life. Here’s how according to Forbes:

Safety enhanced

Smart home technologies usually incorporate automatic shut-off features that prevent fires. For example, an electrical device is deactivated when its temperature reaches dangerous levels.

Further on, smart homes provide safety for older adults who are prone to falling in their homes by automatically turning on lights when they enter a room. Either that or they alert the caretaker should an accident occur.

A smart doorbell can also be installed so that when it rings, an alert is sent to the person’s phone or tablet, allowing them to see the person at the door.

Smart devices for medical care

Active agers will find independent living much easier with the assistance of a smart home. It could be as simple as a reminder to take their medication on time, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, or maintaining a proper diet.

People with health issues such as diabetes can stay connected to their caregivers by remotely checking their blood sugar level and sending updates through an app. They could further monitor their heart rate and sleep pattern with a smartwatch or fitness tracker.

Smart but fun too

Voice-activated devices can be a novel way for entertainment. Amazon, for example, has a huge library of games which people can play on their Alexa devices.

Besides games, users could use these voice-activated devices to play music, podcasts, or audiobooks. They can also help you connect to Zoom calls on the TV with loved ones or to your favourite movies in films.
