How to maximise space in a small lifestyle suite: Part 2

IN A previous article, we shared tips on how to maximise space in smaller lifestyle and condo suites, which involved the careful selection of furniture and furnishings to compliment the living space.

Continuing on that theme, here are a few more tips.

Furniture with multiple functions

When space is limited, try looking for furnishings that have multiple uses. This includes the usage of wooden chairs or stools as side tables. Wooden chests or straw baskets can be utilised both as storage units whilst doubling up as tables.

Ceiling-height storage

You can place the less-used items high up on storage cupboards or racks. This has the obvious advantage of freeing up precious floor space for other items, instead of having bulky cupboards. This method allows residents to make the most of the wall / ceiling space which otherwise would have been unutilised.

Minimalist workstation

Use a fold-out desk for the workstation. Once you are done grinding away on your laptop, simply push the flat surface up against the wall to immediately free up some space. Conversely, you can forgo a workstation completely by using the dining table (or island divider) as a desk.

Mono-colour scheme

This is a trick favoured by many interior designers to create an illusion of spaciousness in the smaller units. Painting the unit in one colour with similar shades for furnishings and flooring will have the desired effect of “enlarging” a small space. Choose bright or neutral colours such as white, beige or pastel shades to create this illusion.
