TEBRAU MP Steven Choong has clarified that he did not hop to Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) from PKR and that he was in fact sacked from the party last year, FMT reported.
In an interview with the news portal, Choong who is PBM’s candidate for Puteri Wangsa in the upcoming Johor state polls explained that following the incident he was not a member of any party for “at least eight months” before forming PBM with Larry Sng, another former PKR member.
Both Choong and Sng who is MP for Julau were sacked on Feb 28 last year for expressing support for the then Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government which was led by former premier Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
According to Choong he had never criticised PKR or its leadership prior to his sacking.
“I did not hold any press conference or issue any statement saying I had lost confidence in PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he added.
Choong went on to claim that PKR, even before deciding to sack him, had already planned to drop him from its list of candidates in the next general election and added that the main reason he had declared support for Muhyiddin was because he wanted to continue serving the people of Tebrau well.
“Declaring support for Muhyiddin allowed me to have access to government resources, agencies and ministers,” he justified.
Choong also expressed his frustration over the difficulty he had experienced in his work as an MP from Pakatan Harapan following the Sheraton Move.
“I could not solve the people’s problems,” he lamented, adding that he is much happier now because he has access to ministers, which allowed him to better serve the people. – March 3, 2022
