“I received threats from the ‘corrupt’ and they are conspiring against me,” says Anwar

THE Prime Minister has claimed that “wealthy people” who have stolen billions of ringgit from the country are conspiring against him as he intensifies his battle against corruption.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is the Finance Minister, said times are tough and his administration needs to rid the country of corruption.

“I have received all sorts of threats. These rich people who have stolen billions of ringgits are now ganging up on me but I will carry on fighting against corruption,” he said at a Qurban ceremony before joining the congregants for Friday prayers at Masjid Jamek An-Nur Guar Perahu, Seberang Prai Tengah today (June 30).

The Tambun MP stressed that he is willing to cooperate, even if it means being investigated by the appropriate authorities, if he is suspected of being involved in corruption, and pointed out that his family received no special treatment while occupying the highest post in the country for seven months.

“If I am suspected of being involved in corruption, amassing money to enrich Wan Azizah (his wife), Nurul Izzah and my other children, report it to the authorities,” Anwar said.

At the same time, Anwar maintained that he holds no grudges towards anyone and that he has not asked the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate any individuals involved in corruption at this point in time.

“If anyone is being investigated by MACC, that is MACC doing its job. I did not order it,” the he said.

In response to the multiple allegations levelled against his administration, he urged the public to distinguish between slander and political attacks.

According to Anwar, among the false charges he has come across are that his administration has harmed Islam, that there is a shortage of foreign direct investment, and that the government has signed off on the country’s interests in the Ambalat sea block, a resource-rich marine area located at south-east of Sabah in the Sulawesi Sea.

“There are all sorts of slander being spewed. The people can listen to them, but they must analyse them fairly. I may have my weaknesses, but people should not resort to slander,” he stressed. – June 30, 2023
