WITH the Crackhouse Comedy Club’s operations being suspended by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) after a patron abused its open mic night to engage in a provocative act, several people bemoaned the authority’s knee-jerk reaction and took to social media to vent their frustration.
Several netizens, however, took the opportunity to poke fun at politicians, saying that if action had to be taken against the club for one patron’s misbehaviour, the same should apply to Parliament and politicians too!
“Comedy Club has been suspended for allowing such ‘comedy’ skit by a so-called comedian. Using the same logic, our Parliament should also be suspended with the speakers remanded.
“They allowed ‘comedians’ cracked jokes and made us the laughing stock to the whole world,” said user Alawiyah Yusoff.
Echoing Alawiyah’s sentiments, user Idiot1986 added: “I think we need to extend it to the cabinet and part of the govt. The daily tortures they release can raise blood pressure too.”
However, netizen Chi Kha Rhu “disagreed” with the duo’s suggestions and said politicians make better comedians than those in any comedy club.
“I disagree. The politician are better comedian than those in the Comedy Club. Life would be mundane without them.”
Two days ago, a 54-second video went viral on social media, featuring a woman wearing a headscarf and a baju kurung, claiming to have memorised parts of the al-Quran during a comedy skit.
Soon after, she took off her hijab and clothes on stage, revealing her skimpy dress underneath. Her act received cheers and laughter from the club’s patrons.
Yesterday, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said that DBKL has suspended Crackhouse Comedy Club’s operations until further notice.
“We will not compromise on anyone who inflame racial and religious sentiments. I hope such incident doesn’t happen again in the Federal Territories or any parts of the country,” Astro Awani reported him as saying.
It is to note that DBKL suspended the comedy club’s operations despite its management lodging a police report against the lady earlier.
The lady abused the club’s privileges
Several comedians such as Harith Iskandar and Douglas Lim have criticised the authorities for their move, claiming the lady took advantage of the club’s open mic night.
On a serious note, user Naked Trombone Guy said being an open mic night session, the comedy club would not have vetted the amateur performers before hand and it was a practice across the globe.
“For the record: It was an open mic, there was no vetting of performers/material, and the allotted time was max 3 mins. This is a common format of open mics globally (for music, comedy, poetry, etc).
“The venue had no idea what was going to happen, and she was banned afterwards.”
Netizen Onn Marosa remarked: “I can’t wrap my head around this. Was she not aware that religion is a sensitive issue here?
“If fake news about sotong babi can get a company into trouble, was she not aware that her actions was far worse? It was a poor excuse for a comedy skit. What’s her motive really?” – July 11, 2022
