THE recently concluded Taiwan Expo 2023 in Malaysia was indeed a testament of the emphasis that Taiwan had placed on Malaysia as one of its most important trading partners.
The event held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) which saw a total of 170 Taiwanese companies showcasing their products across 220 booths was also attended by many leading Malaysian industry players, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government officials.
Taiwan Expo 2023 covered a wide range of industries that taps into Taiwan’s strengths in information and communication technology, Industry 4.0 solutions, green technology, carbon reduction solutions, smart healthcare products, and consumer-oriented products such as halal food, fashion, and beauty and skincare.
The Taiwan Excellence Pavilion had some of the most impressive booths with some 60 products from 33 companies on display.
Smart medicine was a main area of focus within Taiwan Excellence and among the many hospitals and smart healthcare exhibitors were BenQ Dialysis Technology Corp and BioGend Therapeutics
BenQ Dialysis Technology is part of the BenQ Group, one of the largest manufacturers of advanced technologies in the world.
Although BenQ is better known for its ICT products amongst consumers, it is actually a major player in direct to business and other backend applications and products.
The featured BenQ Qflux Dialyser is a high performance hemodialyser that offers not only an outstanding cost-performance ratio compared to products from Europe and Japan, but outright performance advantage against other competitors.
According to BenQ Dialysis Technology Corp Director of Marketing & Sales Alex Lin, one of the key advantages of the Qflux Dialyzer is its use of German made fibres that boost greater consistency, molecular clearance and has excellent biocompatibility.
The use of these thinner fibres allows BenQ to reduce the size of its dialyser without sacrificing any performance. Not only that, but the smaller cartridge size also significantly lowers the medical waste disposal cost for healthcare providers.
As of time of writing, the dialyser is certified in multiple countries around the world, including the US FDA and the Medical Device Authority (MDA) of Malaysia.
The other interesting product is BioGend Therapeutics’ groundbreaking RevoCart one-step cartilage repair and regeneration technology.
Common cartilage repair techniques used today include autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) where patients are required to undergo two surgeries and total knee replacement which is a highly intrusive procedure.
In contrast, BioGend’s RevoCart procedure can be done in one procedure, and due to the minimally invasive surgery, patients can be off the bed on the very same day.
The procedure involves harvesting cartilage tissue from non-weight bearing sites of the patients to be processed and filled into bioresorbable capsules before being implanted into the target site.
This method uses the patient’s own cells and growth process to generate new cartilage that conforms to the site. In a way, it is akin to having a tailor fitted replacement cartilage which boosts full restoration of sport function.
Another important advantage of RevoCart is the much lower cost involved. Due to the less complicated procedure and faster recovery time, the total cost of the procedure can be as little as a quarter of an ACI treatment.
RevoCart has been used successfully in many cases across Taiwan, from professional athletes, including a national team volleyball player, to an 86-year-old patient – the oldest patient thus far.
Taiwan is known for its advanced medical technology with its products often on par or exceeding competition from the West at a fraction of the cost.
ASEAN is one of the key markets in Taiwan’s global trade expansion and Malaysia stands to benefit from many of the products. – Aug 30, 2023
