THE Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) urged the authorities to investigate all reports filed without fear and favour, especially those involving insults against race and religion.
“In general, Malaysian doesn’t condone insults against race and religion. Hence, the police must act on such cases and provide updates to the public regularly,” its commissioner Jerald Joseph said, when contacted by FocusM.
Yesterday, the Global Human Rights Federation, along with 62 other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), handed over a memorandum to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), urging the latter to act against Islamic preachers who have been insulting non-Muslims.
According to Global Human Rights Federation president S Shashi Kumar, JAKIM, being the agency in charge on Islamic matters, should act impartially and reprimand such rogue Islamic preachers.
He was referring to preachers such as Firdaus Wong Wai Hung, Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, Ahmad Iqram Mohd Noor, Riduan Tee Abdullah, Ustaz Syakir Nasoha and Ustaz Idris Sulaiman.
Why the delay?
“These Islamic preachers have been continuously attacking non-Islamic faiths using public domain and social media.
“They continuously mock, misinterpret and manipulate verses of holy books of other religions for their own ulterior motives and hidden agendas,” Shashi Kumar was reported as saying.
Touching the matter, Joseph said that he was aware of the police reports lodged against several incendiary Islamic preachers in the last few months.
Asked to comment on the delays of the preachers getting hauled up, the commissioner stressed that the police must consider this matter seriously and act on it.
“The police must investigate and provide updates on the matter to the public regularly. If there are any delays, an explanation must be given for it,” Joseph remarked. – Jan 27, 2022
