UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) recently took to their X account to congratulate national women’s track cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri for breaking her own national record at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In their post, the university highlighted that Nurul Izzah is a student from its Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science, which they translated to Bahasa Malaysia (BM) as “Fakulti Sukan dan Sains Eksesais”.
TAHNIAH!

Netizens were immediately confused, and took to the comment section to mock UM’s choice of word.
Some netizens had also expressed disappointment over the state of the national language and questioned the UM’s status as a top university in the country.
Meanwhile, many netizens reckoned that the term “sains eksesais” should instead be changed to “sains senaman” and called for UM to “do better” in the future. – Aug 16, 2024
