Is modern marriage a transaction? Viral topic became grounds for a fiery debate

THE battle of the genders has been going on for as long as there were male and females. Timeless it may be, but it is an evergreen topic that makes for an interesting debate.

Recently, a lady turned up the heat on the cyberspace by stating that she was married to a man so that he could provide for her financially.

“Therefore if my husband has a deficit in money, it is his mom and dad who has to help him out, not me as his wife,” she said.

Expect Team Male and Team Female to assemble shortly in the comment section for a grand fight, and we are not disappointed, especially when the post garnered over 2,100 shares.

Netizen @milIkk4ng said the guys who get pissed off from her reply are the “living monitor lizards,” or the people who live by taking advantage of others.

But @xillusions said if a guy marries because he wants a woman to take care of the house, children and prepare food, surely people would call him selfish.

“But when women are married because they want to be supported while not wanting to experience hardship together, is this called normal?” he wondered.

“If you want your husband to be perfect, are you as a wife, perfect?” said @Amir27193025.

“It’s true that the husband provides for his wife. I don’t see anything wrong here. Do men know their responsibilities as husbands? Why do so many people act like transgenders?” @XHoneyde pointed out.

But a peace-seeking @AbaGengGeng said he provides everything for his wife, from top to toe to luxury watches, handbags and even a nice house and cars.

“She wants to kill time after kids grow up by doing freelance. She treats us to nice dinners and she even bought me luxury items,” he said.

Where marriage is concerned, the religious netizens are bound to participate too.

According to @SaifuddinAmri__ marriage in Islam is an act of worship where the rewards flow 24 hours a day.

“How do we get more rewards in marriage? The husband provides for his wife. Reward increases. God’s willing, you enter heaven. Wife helps the husband when he is in trouble.  Reward increases. God’s willing, you enter heaven. Husband helps the wife in trouble. Reward increases. God’s willing, you enter heaven,” he said.

Perhaps the promise of heaven is a strong argument against the force of materialism which is spearheaded by Team Female?

On our part, we like to point out that male and female are entitled to equal rights. And of course, along equal rights come equal responsibility. —May 30, 2025
