THE Mahkota by-election on Sept 28 will feature a contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
BN has nominated the Kluang UMNO Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah while PN’s candidate is former Johor FA footballer and Kluang Bersatu committee member Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the previous UMNO assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2. In the 2022 Johor state election, Sharifah won the seat with a significant majority.
As of Aug 2, the Mahkota constituency has 66,318 eligible voters including regular voters, military personnel, police officers, and a few overseas absentee voters. Early voting is scheduled for Sept 24.
Thousands of BN supporters flocked to the nomination centre at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim today for the Mahkota state by-election. The atmosphere was lively, with supporters waving BN flags and carrying “Vote BN” posters.
Leaders from Pakatan Harapan were also seen present, showing support for the BN candidate. It is estimated that over 2,000 supporters attended the event this morning.
Hundreds of supporters marched with PN candidate from Jalan Besar to the nomination centre at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail for the Mahkota state by-election this morning. The supporters, chanting and reciting selawat, covered approximately one kilometre from the Taman Tasik parking area.
The march began around 8.20am before Haizan, also known as ‘Coach Haizan’, 61, was escorted into the nomination centre by Election Commission (EC) officials.
Notable figures present in support included PN chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Johor Bersatu chairman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal. – Sept 14, 2024
