Johari urges swift completion of Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment amid resident concerns

TITIWANGSA MP and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has called on the developer to complete new homes in the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment project on time, highlighting delays in compensation for relocated residents.

“The residents are expecting those houses as compensation, but when the houses are not completed, problems arise,” he said after launching Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 2025 in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of Kampung Bharu, organised by Kelab Belia Kampung Bharu today.

Johari highlighted resident complaints that they originally signed the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment agreement with one company, which later sold part of its interests to a new developer.

He noted this raises questions about responsibility if the project faces delays or failure, adding that accountability terms were already outlined in the agreement signed eight years ago.

“That is also an issue being looked into. What problems might arise if the project fails to be completed. Who should be responsible, the old company or the new one. All this was already stipulated in the agreement eight years ago,” he said.

The four-year project, featuring larger 900-1,200 sq ft units with incentives like free first-year maintenance, aims to modernise the historic enclave while preserving its heritage. —Dec 21, 2025
