THE Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani warned that every imported product that has signs of discriminating against palm oil products will be fined as much as RM250,000, in line with Section 69 of the Trade Description Act 2011.
He said his ministry will work with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to take action against product-importing companies that discriminate against palm oil in the country.
“We see many imported products from abroad which have nothing to do with palm oil, do not have palm oil content but the packaging states ‘palm-oil free’.
“We have laws. Our products should not be discriminated against. In Indonesia, you can’t find this,” he said to the media after launching the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) logo on Saturday (March 9).
“Out of 251 premises surveyed around the Klang Valley, 80 were found to display products labelled No Palm Oil,” he also said in a Facebook post.
Malaysia’s law imposes fines of up to RM250,000 for any discrimination against products, particularly palm oil.
“The ministry will collaborate with the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry to enforce and take immediate action against supermarkets that market such products,” added Johari.
According to him, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council had conducted a study to identify products labelled as discriminatory against palm oil in the country. – March 10, 2024
