Johor polls: Cynicism, mockery bog Anwar on social media following “electoral massacre”

WITH PKR receiving a third drubbing in the Johor state election, its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a statement today saying that his party would abide by the people’s decision.

“While we are concerned about the poor turnout which could affect democratic processes, I congratulate Barisan Nasional (BN) for winning the polls.

“I appreciate the efforts made by our party machinery who worked hard during the campaigning period and take this as a reminder that we have to work harder to gain public support again for the next general election,” the Port Dickson MP had stated.

However, netizens were unimpressed with his statement and called Anwar out for his bad decision despite the drubbing received in the previous Melaka and Sarawak state elections.

User Naz Reiner Ackerman said:(Please step down, Anwar. Let someone fresh like Nurul Izzah Anwar to lead PKR).

Echoing his sentiments, user Silly Chilli added:

Netizen Gocawesome retorted with a jest saying: (Congratulations, sir. As usual, you managed a clean sweep of all the seats contested in the Twitter state election)

Yesterday, BN won a two-thirds majority at the Johor state legislative assembly by securing 40 out of the 56 seats contested.

Pakatan Harapan only managed to win 12 seats while Perikatan Nasional only won three seats. PKR managed to only secure the Bukit Batu seat, albeit with wafer-thin majority of 137 votes.

Push for anti-party hopping law now!

Earlier on, PKR raised eyebrows when it decided to contest using it own logo despite allies DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) persuading it to use the Pakatan banner to show a united front.

However, several PKR leaders stated that they wanted to use their own banner to contest claiming Pakatan’s logo carried too much baggage, owing it was designed when former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was leading the pact.

On that note, user Barry Rogers asked Anwar on how long Pakatan is going to give BN an easy electorate win, given that the Opposition pact could not put up a united front.

With that, user Shafiq Iqbal offered a solution on how PKR and Pakatan could salvage its image among voters; push Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to table the anti-party hopping law this month itself.  (Datuk Seri, make sure this anti-party hopping law is passed in this sitting. Push the prime minister all you can. If not, you will face low voter turnout for a long time) – March 13, 2022.
