THE Johor state election will take place on March 12, with early voting set for March 8, said Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh.
The nomination day is set for Feb 26, which will lead to a campaigning period of 14 days.
Based on statistics released by the EC, there are 2.599 million registered voters who are eligible to vote in the Johor state election to be held soon, with 2.576 million of them ordinary voters.
The 56-seat Johor state legislative assembly was dissolved on Jan 22 after incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad met with Johor monarch Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru.
“For the purposes of monitoring campaign activities throughout the official campaign period, the EC will enact 56 campaign enforcement teams consisting of police officers, local authorities and the contesting candidates,” Abdul Ghani said during a press conference at 302 Persada Johor International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru today (Feb 9).
Meanwhile, previous restrictions on postal voters have been abolished, allowing voters residing in southern Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia to vote in the forthcoming state polls.
Those who have returned to Malaysia not less than 30 days within the span of five years of the dissolution of the state assembly will also be allowed to vote.
Voters will also have an additional 30 minutes compared to previous elections.
In a statement, Abdul Ghani added that the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) is currently being updated by the EC, the Health Ministry and the National Security Council and will be announced at a later date. – Feb 9, 2022
