Johor polls: With MUDA entering the race, attacks escalate on Syed Saddiq

WITH the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) announcing its intention to work with Pakatan Harapan and contest in the upcoming Johor state election, a short video is going viral on social media criticising one of its founding members, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

In the video that runs for one minute and 27 seconds posted by user Shahrol Shiro, which appears to be well-funded, its producers interviewed three people who claimed to be residents of Muar.

The caption on the footage reads: (The people of Muar express their frustration on Pakatan Harapan. Don’t get fooled again)

The first man, a senior citizen, said he was disappointed with the previous Pakatan Harapan government for failing to fulfill their promises.

“We believed in them and had high hopes. Unfortunately, our hopes remain as hopes. As a Muar resident, I’m disappointed,” he said.

Another man, a Grab rider, said that he was working in Singapore before moving back to Muar after COVID-19 hit.

“They promised us jobs in Muar but nothing came by. They promised us honey but gave us poison instead,” the rider added.

Rattled by the former minister?

The last man was a fisherman, who took pot shots at Syed Saddiq for not fulfilling his promises to the people of Muar.

“They are all liars and I’m angry with Syed Saddiq. He did fulfil his promises but only for his cronies, not the people here,” he lashed out.

The video then ends with #JanganTerpedaya (Don’t get hoodwinked) and #FakeSaddiq.

However, several netizens took to social media to take pot shots at the video, adding some quarters were getting rattled by the former minister’s influence.

“Rich, coming from a party of corrupt kleptocrats,” said user John Van Huizen.

Netizen AmVan Huizen remarked: “They are surely afraid of SS.”

Commenting on the video, Syed Saddiq said that it was clear that a lot of money was being used to discredit him, with multiple networks being mobilised.

“But as a public servant, not only must I be open to criticism but also welcome it. That’s why instead of undermining the critic, I addressed his concerns by showing my report card.

“I will fight them using facts and figures,” he told FocusM.– Jan 31, 2022
