Julau MP: “Confrontation with ‘gangsters’ due to possible grudge, not RM5 angpow”

JULAU MP Datuk Larry Sng said his close encounter with four alleged gangsters did not stem from the RM5 angpow that he had given the latter but possibly due to a past grudge.

“To me, it was not so much an issue of money which upset them but may have been a grudge from before,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (Feb 16).

“I am aware that their head had previously supported another candidate during the election and lost big money in gambling when he bet on me losing the last general election. It may have started from there.”

Recalling the incident on Sunday (Feb 11), the Parti Bangsa Malaysia president explained that he had packed some RM5 angpow to give to children for good fortune, stressing that the red packets were “not intended for adults”.

“At 12.30pm, I came across the gangsters at an open house and they asked for angpow. I told them that it was ‘small money’ but since they insisted I said I would give it to them for luck,” he said.

“At 5pm as I was leaving the Pakan district officer’s house, four gangsters, including their head, surrounded me and said the amount was too small and expressed their displeasure. I agreed and told them that next year I would prepare more.”

Sng said the group then asked for RM500 and he agreed to transfer the amount.

He said the group refused to disperse and started arguing with his supporters.

“It had come to my attention later that the head of the gang had informed someone in my entourage that they had prepared weapons in their car and was planning to attack me,” Sng added.

“For my personal safety and for those around me, I went straight to the police station to lodge a report.”

According to Julau district police chief DSP Andam Sulin, the four suspects, aged between 32 and 53, were arrested on Feb 12, less than 24 hours after Sng lodged a report on the matter.

“Based on the police report lodged by the complainant, the four men were not happy with the RM5 angpow given to them,” Andam was quoted as saying by The Borneo Post.

“Investigations found that one of the suspects added RM10 in the ang pow and returned it to Sng to show his dissatisfaction. However, the probe is still ongoing to find out the cause of the incident.” – Feb 16, 2024
