Khalid says MCA, a loser should not fight for Kota Lama seat

AMANAH communications director Khalid Samad said there is no point in MCA contesting the Kota Lama state seat because the Barisan Nasional (BN) component party has often lost in previous elections.

He said his party will defend the seat in the 16th General Election (GE16) adding that assemblyman Dr Hafidzah Mustaqim has served well so far after representing Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) to win the PAS stronghold in the PRN last August.

Khalid also said there is no longer a term for traditional seats, as claimed by Kelantan MCA leader Chua Hock Kuan yesterday (June 15) because the party “released it” in the last PRN.

“More important is that we want to win in as many areas as possible. It is proven that the Amanah candidate has won for the unity government, and that decision needs to be recognised by MCA as a member of BN.

“So, if MCA wants to compete but loses, what’s the point? Previous results prove that they cannot win,” a local news portal quoted him as saying.

The last time MCA won in Kota Lama was in 1995. From the 1999 general election until 2023, PAS controlled the seat through its candidate and Amanah has now won the seat.

Speaking on another channel, Khalid stated that Amanah will not give way to other parties including MCA in the Kota Lama state assembly seat.

Khalid said they stick to the existing practice of the incumbent party continuing to contest in the area involved, referring to the victory of its representative Dr Hafidzah Mustaqim who won the Pakatan Harapan (PH) seat with a majority of 202 votes. – June 16, 2024
