Kit Siang: “Is MACC aware how much 1MDB money was spent in GE13?”

VETERAN lawmaker Lim Kit Siang has raised the question if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is aware how much money from 1MDB was spent in the 13th General Election (GE13) in 2013.

His question came after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said in Parliament yesterday (Aug 3) that MACC is currently reviewing a report on a minister and two deputy ministers following reports lodged on alleged misappropriation of funds or party allocations worth tens of millions of ringgit.

“MACC owes it to Malaysians to explain why investigations have not been opened against Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and Deputy Health Minister I Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali and why it is taking MACC more than a month to ‘review’ the report,” Lim said.

“When will the ‘review’ be followed by ‘investigation’?”

In June, UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi testified in court that three UMNO MPs had quit the party and joined Bersatu after the 14th general election (GE14) “out of fear” that they would be investigated by MACC.

Without disclosing any names, he said the MPs represented Jeli (Mustapa), Masjid Tanah (Mas Ermieyati) and Bagan Serai (Noor Azmi).

“There has recently been a lot of talks about a political financing act with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob listing it as one of the ‘reforms’ he wanted to do following the passing of the anti-hopping law to discourage MPs from switching parties,” Lim continued.

“Is MACC aware how much money from 1MDB was spent in GE13?

“Is this the reason why – for a decade – no leader from UMNO or Barisan Nasional (BN) had dared to condemn the 1MDB scandal although Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz told Parliament that as of June 30, the remaining debt commitment of 1MDB stands at RM32.08 bil?” – Aug 4, 2022
