KL High Court grants leave to Ramasamy’s Urimai to challenge ROS on its registration

THE Kuala Lumpur High Court has today (Feb 27) granted leave to the pro-term committee of the United Rights of the Malaysian Party (Urimai) to challenge the Home Ministry’s decision or the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to disallow the party’s formation.

The court will fix the date for the hearing of the case soon while its granting of leave is a significant step for Urimai to be successfully registered soon, according to interim council chairman Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy.

“The growing popularity of Urimai as result of the support of Indians across the country is tremendous recognition,” the former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II announced on his Facebook post.

“There is nothing to stop the authorities from denying the formal recognition of Urimai which is the only political party in the country that will fight for the rights of Indians in the country without fear or favour!”

Recall that Urimai had in December 2024 filed a judicial review in the KL High Court to seek the declaration within 14 days for the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to register Urimai as a political party.

According to the affidavit filed, the Home Minister shall alternatively hear and decide on the appeal that Urimai had filed against ROS’ decision to reject Urimai’s application on July 2 this year.

The judicial review which was filed by Gunamalar Law Chambers was heard today in front of High Court Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz with the Home Minister and the ROS named as respondents in this case.

“The formation of this party is our constitutional right as enshrined in the Article 10(1)(c) of Federal Constitution,” Urimai secretary Satees Muniandy had previously noted.

“When the Madani government continues to walk on the path of their predecessors in refusing the constitutional rights of Malaysians despite their reform rhetorics of the past, we have no choice but to refer to the Court of Law to protect and uphold our fundamental right.”

Urimai was founded in November 2023 by Ramasamy who was with DAP since 2005 but quit prior to the six states election in August 2023 after being dropped as a candidate.

The party name in Tamil means “rights”, which Ramasamy had previously said reflects Urimai’s purpose “to defend the rights of the people, especially the non-Malays”. – Feb 27, 2025
