KL launches ambitious PSKL2040 focused on sustainability and well-being

THE Malaysian capital unveiled its much-anticipated Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (PSKL2040) today, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighting the plan’s emphasis on creating a city for all, integrating new technologies and ensuring the well-being of its residents in his speech at the launch event.

“We have all these skyscrapers, but we must also provide affordable housing, clean stalls, for instance. This is while adapting to new technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and energy transition that were not included in past plans,” he said in his speech at the launch of PSKL2040 today.

The PSKL2040 is a comprehensive framework meticulously crafted to address current challenges and future trends and embraces a holistic approach considering climate change, economy, demography, lifestyle and infrastructure.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh stated that the plan aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda (NUA), reflecting the city’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its populace.

Replacing the previous PSKL2020, the new plan outlines six main goals: innovative and productive initiatives, inclusive, equitable and livable environments; green, healthy, and vibrant spaces; efficient mobility and environmentally friendly; as well as integrated and sustainable development.

The plan’s core objectives aim to enhance economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects of the city.

Gazetted on Oct 19, the PSKL2040 is set to steer Kuala Lumpur’s strategic development over the next two decades, promoting sustainability and prosperity for all its citizens. The plan will be made accessible to the public starting on Nov 23, encouraging active engagement and feedback from the city’s residents.

Looking ahead, the city will also unveil the draft KL Local Plan 2040, which will be publicly displayed in the first quarter of next year. – Nov 9, 2023
