Lady’s fiery complaint about lift etiquette divides netizens

ETIQUETTE compels the young and hale to give up their seats in a public transport for those who may need it more, take for example, a pregnant lady or the golden generation in crutches.

But should this extend to the lift in a shopping mall too? Recently, a lady grabbed quite the attention on the cyberspace claiming that the young and hale should use the escalator instead of the lift.

She pointed out to a sign beside the lift where pregnant ladies, ladies pushing a pram, and the infirm should be prioritised. “Why are you troubling the people who have children?” she ranted.

Her complaints have since sparked a fiery debate, with netizens divided over the situation.

Netizen @boyxx_brown said no one asked her to breed anyway but she shows her privilege when she has kids.

Also, @Nazlimohd23 pointed out that the lift said it was a priority, and not compulsory to give way to the pregnant or infirm. “Everyone has the privilege to use the lift. It is more about common sense,” he said.

“It is their right. We cannot prohibit them,” added @AzarAri121865 while @KarotSusu22 decided to cheekily veer off the topic with his photo comment:

Then there was @fauziazizan who recommended parents to buy the type of stroller that could fit into the escalator.

However, @SehaHaris replied that there were many hazards and risks of bringing a child in a stroller while using the escalator.

According to @SehaHaris, even the foldable stroller may result in the child falling or getting trapped in the escalator.

Perhaps @alissa_zuyyin was the voice of reason in the heated comment section, stating that it was not wrong that the young and hale give way to those who need the lift more.

“Give them the priority. Be considerate. The lady was wrong because of the way she delivered her message,” she said. —May 19, 2025
