Lamp post confusion: If DBKL didn’t give contract to SCIB, then who did?, DAP asks

IN a twist, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) today denied appointing Sarawak Consolidated Industries Bhd (SCIB) as the contractor to replace 200 lamp posts in the Klang Valley.

“We would like to refer to several media reports which mentioned that SCIB will be carrying out some work for DBKL.

“We have never authorised any third party to appoint SCIB or any of its subsidiaries to carry out projects for DBKL,” Free Malaysia Today reported the local council as saying.

On June 7, Bernama reported that SCIB, through its subsidiary SCIB Properties Sdn Bhd, had obtained the contact to engineer, procure, build and operate 200 lamp posts in the Klang Valley from Ennova Sdn Bhd worth RM30.75 mil.

The project is aimed at replacing existing lamp posts with “integrated smart lamp posts”. The work is expected to begin in June this year and finish by May next year.

“The contract is expected to help boost SCIB Group’s profitability, which will be distributed among the subsidiaries in stages,” it was reported as saying.

The huge amount raised the ire of Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, who broke it down to a staggering RM153,750 to replace one lamp post.

“And why is the contact being given through the company, Ennova Sdn Bhd, instead of coming straight from DBKL or Putrajaya?” the DAP leader was reported as asking yesterday.

Responding to DBKL’s latest statement, Lim told FocusM said that the former’s explanation was making the issue even more mind-boggling than before.

“So, who is paying whom RM30.75 mil for 200 street lamp contract? Or is the DBKL denying that there was an engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract being dished out?

“And will the local council and Securities Commission ask SCIB for clarification on the matter?” he queried. – June 22, 2022
