The Chow Kit

Formerly known as Kuala Lumpur’s red-light district, now it’s one of the places to explore this year.

It’s time to plan your dream destination and the New York Times Travel is just in time to help us with their annual list of 52 Places To Go in 2020. Throughout the long list, one of the spots just caught our eyes – Chow Kit, an underappreciated neighbourhood which has received a dose of fresh style and energy.

Placed at 20th, Chow kit was listed among amazing cities like Greenland, Uganda and La Paz, Mexico. As the street located along with Malaysia financial and political hub, Kuala Lumpur, Chow Kit has gained more attention with recent openings of two new hip hotels – The Chow Kit and MoMo’s.

Designed by the Brooklyn-bases design practice, Studio Tack, The Chow Kit has a standout interior and exterior delivers a fresh dose of style and energy to the red-light district. With 110 rooms, the hotel welcomes hand-textured walls, deep-tufted banquettes and layered rugs with a modern Malaysian cuisine at The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar.

And then we have MoMo’s, Chow Kit’s next-door neighbour, is the new social hotel that comes with micro-rooms, but huge personality. The hotel also home to MoMosita Taco bar, and The Playground – a social space that replaces the conventional hotel lobby.

Chow Kit street is also nearby to the largest fresh produce market, Chow Kit Market, Southeast Asia’s biggest Sikh temple, Gurdwara Tatt Khalsa Diwan and the Caribbean-influence restaurants, Joloko.

Formerly known as a famous nightclub strip, Jalan Doraisamy now is full of reimagined shophouses known as The Row, where an enclave of hip stores, art spaces and places to eat and drink located.
