A DAP MP has echoed UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan in calling for the Government to stop the mandatory requirement for the public to check in via the MySejahtera application, effective April 1.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said that the Government does not even have to explain the rationale for keeping the MySejahtera application beyond April 1 as there are simply no reasons for the tracking anymore.
“Most scientists now believe that the COVID-19 virus is here for good and could pose less danger over time, hence the status known as endemicity,” he said.
“Just as we have already done away with the checking of body temperature, the Government should also stop tracking people’s movement. This is basically an intrusion into people’s privacy.”
According to Lim, Malaysians are already overwhelmed with the number of cold calls and unsolicited messages received on the phone on a daily basis, and the leak and misuse of personal data cannot continue.
“If Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s statement is true that the massive personal database is safe, secured and would not be utilised in any commercial way by MySJ Sdn Bhd, why then did the private company reportedly pay RM338.6 mil for the MySejahtera app software licence?” he queried.
“It is only natural for a private company to enter into any activity mainly for profit, especially when RM338.6 mil was paid for a product.
“It is time for the Government to halt the direct ‘surveillance’ mechanism immediately after two years of the pandemic.”
Khairy recently stressed that the MySejahtera application and its data still belong to the Government despite a previous deal on its intellectual property (IP) and software licence.
Khairy also said the decision by Entomo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (formerly known as KPISoft Malaysia) to sell the rights over the app to MySJ Sdn Bhd for RM338.6 mil has no bearing on the Government’s negotiation with the latter over the app.
“The amount they have agreed to with Entomo has nothing to do with the government’s negotiation,” he said when pressed by reporters.
“I can tell you for a fact that the amount that we are negotiating with MySJ is much, much lower than RM300 mil. Far lower than RM300 mil.” – March 30, 2022
