Local auto sales gain momentum on BUDI Diesel, new launches

LOCAL total industry volume (TIV) rose 8% month-on-month (MoM) and 3% year-on-year (YoY) in July 2026, supported by continuous sales promotions, a longer working month and the introduction of BUDI Diesel.

The new subsidy mechanism, which provides diesel at RM2.10 per litre through MyKad verification, boosted commercial vehicle sales by 21% MoM.

August sales are expected to remain strong, particularly following Perodua’s immediate price reductions of up to RM4,700 for the second-generation Axia. YTD TIV reached 459,000 units, up 3% and within expectations.

National marques maintained their dominance, accounting for 66% of TIV compared with 63% in 7MCY25. Proton strengthened its share to 25% from 18%, while Perodua held 41%, down from 45%. Strong demand for affordable models and new launches continued to support both brands.

Among non-national marques, Toyota led July with a 32% market share, ahead of Honda at 25%.

Toyota benefited from strong Hilux sales following BUDI Diesel, as well as continued demand for hybrid models. BYD ranked third at 6%, helped by stock-clearing promotions, while Mazda and Chery each captured about 5%.

Passenger vehicle sales reached 68,900 units, rising 8% MoM and 5% YoY. Toyota sales increased 19% MoM and 7% YoY, supported by the new Yaris Cross, Vios, Yaris, Corolla Cross Hybrid and Hilux, with 14,000 backlogged orders.

Perodua rose 16% MoM but fell 5% YoY, driven by the Traz, Axia, Bezza, Myvi and Ativa, with 70,000 backlogged orders. Its revised QV-E pricing is expected to improve demand, although competition with Proton’s e.MAS 5 remains intense.

Proton recorded the strongest growth among major marques, with sales up 10% MoM and 29% YoY, driven by the e.MAS 5 and new Saga.

The e.MAS 5 became Malaysia’s best-selling EV, while Saga accumulated 70,000 bookings. Proton has around 80,000 backlogged orders.

Mazda sales declined 6% MoM but surged 67% YoY, while Honda fell 17% MoM but grew 6% YoY amid concerns over ageing specifications and increasing competition.—Aug 19, 2026
