Local comedian urges Malaysians to stop giving ang pows to single adults

AS Malaysian Chinese gear up for the grand final day of the Lunar New Year celebrations, it may be the right time to highlight what some consider a pertinent issue. Well, for local comic Dr Jason Leong it is anyway. What seems to have got his goat is the practice of giving red packets to unmarried adults.

In a hilarious video on his Facebook page, Leong lamented that it should be the reverse, as married couples, especially those with kids, have far more overhead.

The former medic turned comedian said he could not understand the logic, especially when handing out ang pows to single friends far richer than him. He urged people to stop underwriting these bachelors’ flamboyant lifestyles.

The clip has been shared over 300 times, meaning more than a few agreed with Leong’s sentiments. Here are some of the comments.

Some suggested that people should stay single to be the’recipient’ rather than the ‘giver’.

Some said it was a small compensation for having to endure the endless grilling over their unmarried status.

Of course, more than one suggested giving out empty red packets to the “shameless” specimens.

Alas, a fair few seemed to miss the punchline, berating Leong for not fully understanding the symbolic significance of giving ang pows. It needed one netizen to remind them that it was meant as a joke.
