Loke condemns Sanusi’s baseless and divisive statement

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has expressed his strong condemnation of the baseless and irresponsible statement by Perikatan Nasional (PN) elections director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Sanusi’s remarks which link the non-Muslim community in Malaysia as the largest contributors and recipients of bribery have been deemed controversial and lacking in factual basis.

Loke urged Sanusi to issue a public apology if he fails to provide substantial evidence to support his allegations. Responsible and accountable public discourse is vital to nurturing a harmonious and inclusive society, according to the Transport Minister.

Loke also pointed out that such sweeping statements only serve to incite feelings of hatred among the diverse racial and religious communities in the country. On the contrary, Malaysia is known for its multi-ethnic society and maintaining harmony and unity among its citizens is of paramount importance.

Challenging the caretaker Kedah menteri besar to present the sources and evidence behind his claims, the Seremban MP questioned the legitimacy of his assertions.

Moreover, DAP has demanded clarification regarding the reports and studies that allegedly support his conclusions. It is crucial to rely on factual information and credible research to foster understanding and address the issue of corruption effectively.

DAP is of the opinion that corruption is a societal problem that must be tackled collectively. Regardless of their background, anyone involved in corrupt practices should be held accountable.

Loke also noted that corruption cannot be linked to any race at all, hence wrong is wrong irrespective of one’s ethnicity or religious affiliation.

“Repeated statements like this prove that PN is a detriment to the harmony between races in Malaysia and should be rejected by our mass society for the sake of the unity of the Malaysian people,” he added.

As Malaysia progresses towards its shared future, it is imperative that individuals in positions of influence prioritise dialogue and understanding to build bridges between communities rather than making baseless and divisive statements.

The unity and cohesion of the Malaysian people must remain paramount in order to achieve a prosperous and inclusive nation. – July 12, 2023
