Lokman Adam charged for allegedly insulting PM, Gov’t on Facebook

FORMER UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Adam has gotten himself in trouble again for posting insulting remarks on social media, this time aimed at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the Government.

Lokman, 49, pleaded not guilty to both the charges that were allegedly made through Facebook using the profile name “Lokman Noor Adam Official” with the intention of annoying others.

Lokman was alleged to have uploaded two separate Facebook posts, insulting and alleging that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri had conspired with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to convict Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

Bernama reported that the charges, framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and punishable under Section 233 (3) of the same law, provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year and can also be fined RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

It has also been reported that the prosecution asked for bail to be set at RM15,000 for each charge although Lokman’s lawyer asked for RM2,000 bail for each charge on grounds that that Lokman – who now works as a satay seller – did not have a stable income with 11 children of schooling age to care for.

Judge Nor Hasniah Abd Razak allowed him bail of RM8,000 with one surety on each charge and also ordered him to not post any statement on the case on social media.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Mohd Izhar prosecuted, while Lokman Adam was represented by lawyer Logen Eskander.

The court set Sept 26 for mention. – Sept 1, 2022
