THE Election Commission (EC) recorded a voter turnout of seven per cent at the P.161 Pulai Parliamentary by-election and 9% at the N.13 Simpang Jeram state seat as of 9am amid a rainy day that many fear may disrupt the voting process.
The polling centres were opened at 8am and will close at 6pm, today while voters, supporters, candidates and personnel are prohibited from wearing clothing or accessories displaying the name, symbol or image of any political party or candidate participating in the election.
The EC also reminded voters and party members that carrying campaign materials, slogans or taglines that may be interpreted as endorsing any political ideology is also forbidden.
Cloudy and rainy weather accompanied the electoral process at 61 polling centres during the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections this morning, according to Bernama.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast rain in the morning and thunderstorms in the late evening for both constituencies.
Nevertheless, voters were seen arriving at the polling stations as early as 7am, following the advice from the EC.
A total of 3,370 EC officials are on duty today, along with 4,000 police officers and personnel, to ensure a smooth electoral process. – Sept 9, 2023
