Malaysian who joined Ukraine war survives drone attack

THE Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain, has confirmed that Malaysian citizen Lee Bing Hang has joined the Ukraine Foreign Legion as a mercenary in the Russia-Ukraine War.

“During a drone attack, Lee managed to escape but dropped his MyKad and driving license, but managed to retain his passport,”  he said.

Previously, those documents became viral in cyberspace, leading to investigations that led to his identification.

Razarudin explained that investigations showed that Lee was motivated to sign up as a mercenary because of his interest in the military and the attractive salary of up to US$2,700 a month.

Lee Bing Hang is reported to have survived but sustained injuries from a Russian drone attack.

Netizen Irfan_newboys in a post on X added that it is not strange for Malaysians to be involved in the Russia-Ukraine War.

He said that in the past, Malaysians have participated in the Syrian Civil War alongside ISIS, with some even rising to senior leadership positions.

The post had drawn the attention of many other netizens who painted the grim situation in a lighter shade.

Netizen 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 won the comment section with his remark, “Maybe he was confused about the Perlis flag and the Ukrainian flag being nearly the same. He think he was serving Perlis but it was Ukraine,” said Vance, in reference to his IC which showed an address in Perlis.

As usual, a picture speaks a thousand words.

Irwanzoha said he was probably a paid soldier adding that many citizens from Thailand also joined the war.

Another netizen wondered if there was an advertisement for such a job on Jobstreet and that he had missed it.

DrSabir did a funny by speculating that perhaps he was merely a supplier of harummanis on the battlefield. The harummanis is a type of mango synonymous with the state of Perlis.

Irfan_newboys continued, saying that earlier this year and in January, it was reported that some Malaysians had joined the Wagner Group to fight alongside Russia in the same conflict.

However, the Royal Malaysian Police has denied that they were involved. – Nov 5, 2024
