“Macam ayam, bah”: Uncle Bob, Nestle launch new meat-free menu in Sabah

LOOKING for a healthier plant-based option instead of the regular red meat? Popular nationwide chain of fried chicken restaurants Uncle Bob is offering just that through its first meat-free menu using Nestle’s Harvest Gourmet plant-based product range.

Available across 89 Uncle Bob outlets in Sabah, the meat-free alternative is aimed at serving Malaysians looking to try meat alternatives while still enjoying the distinctive flavour of Uncle Bob’s crispy chicken.

The plant-based menu will utilise Harvest Gourmet’s Plant-Based Schnitzel and its recently launched Plant-Based Nuggets.

All Harvest Gourmet products are locally made in Malaysia with natural ingredients such as non-GMO soy – offering a source of fibre and high protein without any compromise on taste and texture.

Nestle Professional business executive officer Yit Woon Lai said the Harvest Gourmet plant-based range enables the company to meet the needs of increasingly health-conscious consumers looking to incorporate plant-based alternatives into their diets and grow the plant-based segment in Malaysia.

“As awareness and consumption of plant-based foods in Malaysia continue to grow, we look forward to more collaborations with our food and beverage (F&B) partners,” she said in a statement announcing the newfound collaboration.

“In line with this, we are excited to partner with Uncle Bob, a rapidly-growing national chain that believes in driving plant-based consumption,” she said, adding that Uncle Bob will be the first F&B operator serving a Harvest Gourmet plant-based menu in Sabah.

“Revolutionary solutions”

Elaborating further on the idea of a meat-free meal, Uncle Bob director Kelvin Ng said the group is honoured and pleased to have been selected by Nestle, one of the world’s largest F&B manufacturers, to be part of a joint effort to launch Harvest Gourmet’s 100% plant-based products in Sabah.

“Meat-free solutions have been well accepted in many parts around the world,” he said. “Today, we no longer have to travel to other countries to taste plant-based food because we can now have it here in Sabah at Uncle Bob’s.

“Meat-free, plant-based solutions and ingredients are revolutionary in the F&B industry in Borneo, and Uncle Bob is proud to be the pioneering brand to introduce it here,” he added.

Available in Sabah from August 2022 onwards, Uncle Bob’s first plant-based menu will feature items such as Plant-Based Fried Unchicken, Plant-Based Oblong Burger, Plant-Based Crispy Golden Nuggets and Plant-Based KBOB Golden Nuggets, available both a la carte and as a set meal inclusive of Milo or Sjora, with prices ranging from RM9.90 to RM11.90.

The Harvest Gourmet x Uncle Bob initiative, a joint effort to expand plant-based meal solutions in the out-of-home sector, was launched on Wednesday (Aug 31) at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) Penampang, Sabah.

Uncle Bob was the first brand in Malaysia to introduce street-food-style fried chicken into the market in 2002.

It had humble beginnings, selling takeout from a hawker stall in night markets, and eventually ventured into Sabah in 2006 where it rebranded and improved its business structure and model by opening kiosks and outlets in shopping malls, hypermarkets and supermarkets, commercial complexes and gas stations throughout the state. – Sept 3, 2022
