MACC: 1,296 investigation papers opened against politicians since 2018

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had opened 1,296 investigation papers against politicians between 2018 and June this year.

Out of that number, 218 indictments had been made, de factor Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan said in a July 28 parliamentary reply to Wangsa Maju MP Tan Yee Kew.

The investigation papers and indictments were based on 6,237 reports lodged with the agency, he added, but not all reports met the criteria for a corruption investigation.

Such papers, said Takiyuddin, were opened based on information that had elements of corruption, abuse of power and misappropriation.

MACC’s biggest victory yet came yesterday when former prime minister Najib Razak was found guilty of seven charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

Najib was sentenced to a 12-year consecutive jail term and fined RM210 mil. But he received a stay of execution pending an appeal.
