THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has intensified its investigation into contract irregularities involving a minister’s spouse, spurred by fresh complaints and evidence.
A source within MACC revealed to a local news portal the receipt of crucial information prompting a deeper probe into potential abuse of power and procedural breaches by the Selangor government in awarding a transport project contract to a company where the husband of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is a partner.
“The complaint and information provided some new clues to be investigated, hence further investigation is underway to see the validity of the new information or clues.
“A thorough investigation was carried out including looking at the issue of abuse of power and mismanagement in compliance with treasury instructions in the process of appointing the company in question by the Selangor government,” the portal reported.
Meanwhile, MACC Operations deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya pointed out the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without public speculation.
Despite initial findings clearing any wrongdoing, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki affirmed readiness for further scrutiny in light of new developments.
On the other hand, Yeoh refrained from commenting on her spouse’s company, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti).
But, amid persistent scepticism, Selangor officials defended Asia Mobiliti’s selection for a demand-responsive transit project, emphasising compliance with regulatory protocols and denying favouritism allegations.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari expressed willingness to disclose details of Asia Mobiliti’s appointment, assuring transparency and adherence to regulations. He did not give any details that would appease concerns that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) is resorting to the same policies that it fought when it was in opposition.
Amidst scrutiny, questions arise regarding potential conflicts of interest and preferential treatment, underscoring the need for accountability and fair practices in government contracts.
The saga continues as the PH-led federal government and the Selangor government are now facing calls for transparency and integrity in public procurement processes.
On May 29, Selangor Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee chairperson Ng Sze Han said Asia Mobiliti’s involvement in the proof of concept (POC) for the demand-responsive transit (DRT) pilot project was through a request for proposal (RFP), and not direct negotiation as alleged.
Ng also said the claim that Asia Mobiliti was the only company selected is untrue, as Badanbas Coach Sdn Bhd was also allowed to implement the POC and another company’s application is being considered for the next phase. – June 1, 2024
