MACC hauls up Guan Eng in Penang undersea tunnel probe

FORMER Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng is currently being questioned at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters over the RM6.3 bil undersea tunnel project in the state.

MACC is investigating the project for possible money laundering. Lim was chief minister from March 11, 2008, to May 14, 2018. He arrived at the MACC headquarters at 1pm.

In July, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said investigation papers on the controversial project was in its final stages of completion.

Azam said the final report will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor sometime this month for further action.

Over the past few weeks, MACC had interviewed a number of Penang government officials including current Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow as well as Seberang Jaya assemblyman Afif Bahardin in his capacity as a state executive councillor from 2013 to 2020.

Former Penang Port Commission chairman Jeffrey Chew was also remanded for four days from July 1 to facilitate investigations into the case and has been released on bail.

The undersea tunnel, which would connect Penang island to the mainland, was mooted in 2011, and Chew was then special officer to Lim.

Six investigation papers had been opened over the project with the first paper opened in July 2017 and the remaining five in Jan 2018.

Lim would vacate his post as chief minister after the May 8 general election to take up the finance minister post when Pakatan Harapan (PH) formed government.

He, together with the rest of his PH colleagues, would be ousted from government by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional at the end of February.

Lim remains DAP secretary-general. He is also Bagan MP. – July 22, 2020
