MACC may freeze another party’s account linked to PN

THE former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s party, Bersatu accounts were frozen last week, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which also said that an inquiry into the source of significant cash discovered in the accounts was ongoing.

Today, Utusan reported a money trail investigation involving RM260 mil suspected of being spent by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) for its political campaign in the 15th General Election (GE15), which may lead to yet another political party account being frozen.

According to the online news site, a source close to the party revealed that the MACC’s freezing action is dependent on the flow of money in question.

The freezing of other accounts linked to PN’s electoral spending could jeopardise the coalition’s charge to win all six states in the upcoming state polls.

Bersatu last week said it would write an official letter to the MACC to request that the order to freeze the party’s account be lifted. The MACC has not freed any of the accounts so far.

Nevertheless, social media networks are buzzing about the possibility that another party’s accounts might be frozen soon.

[Wow! As expected. As a result of the MACC’s tracking of linked accounts, another party account will be frozen. No wonder we never see (the party in question) lift the milo tin. He even took an oath that he is giving charity. Let’s drink milo!]

The post has 13,000 views on Twitter at the time of writing and it also attracted some comments.

Speaking of Bersatu leader Muhyiddin’s press conference, in which he complained that the frozen accounts meant he couldn’t pay staffers or rent, the user says it’s no surprise that the Party Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) leader sitting next to Muhyiddin had a long face.

“Maybe he was thinking about what will happen to the PAS account also. It could also be frozen with Bersatu’s,” said the user.

While most users were posting memes to show their cynicism at the news, a debate was raging about the PN’s source of funds.

In another post, some anti-opposition social media users are questioning a Bersatu member who said the party has 1.2 million members and that they have all been contributing to the party’s ‘tabung’.

User @amrud wrote:

[Haha. 1.2 million members. Someone who donated a lot has already received 1.2 million in the account. So Shafiq (Bersatu supporter) wants to say that the alliance members donate less than rm100. So can it make up to 100 million in the party account?]
