MACC nabs four directors over subsidised cooking oil theft

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained four company directors for their alleged involvement in a syndicate over the misappropriation of subsidised cooking oil supply quota, Bernama reported.

“According to MACC’s rough calculation, the syndicate has been profiting on subsidy payments of RM21.6 mil for three years and there are nine companies that are controlled by this syndicate,” MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya (pic) said in a statement.

“MACC has also frozen 12 accounts belonging to individuals and companies totalling over RM25 mil.”

According to Ahmad Khusairi, the syndicate was given a quota of 1,000 tonnes of cooking oil per month to be processed and repacked into smaller packets to be supplied to retailers and the public, but instead the syndicate had exported the cooking oil to be sold overseas.

The companies had also demanded subsidy payments from the government for the packaging and supply of the cooking oil, Ahmad Khusairi added.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009. – June 10, 2020
