MACC questions Kemabong assemblyman Rubin Balang on coal mining licence

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched an investigation into viral videos alleging corruption involving several Sabah state assemblypersons.

Kemabong assemblyman Datuk Rubin Balang confirmed being questioned by MACC over claims he received a coal mining licence in 2023 as a reward for supporting Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“MACC has (started) its investigation on me regarding the viral issue.

“I think it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment for now,” Rubin said in a text message to Malaysiakini, adding that investigators had recorded his statement yesterday.

The whistleblower behind the videos alleged that the licence, approved on July 14, 2022, was awarded to Wawasan Pembangunan Desa Permai Sdn Bhd, a company where Rubin was the majority shareholder.

Critics argued this constitutes a conflict of interest, as Rubin holds a ministerial-level role as chairperson of the Sabah Economic Development Corporation.

Meanwhile, Tempasuk assemblyman Datuk Mohd Arsad Bistari, implicated in bribery following a video recording published in Malaysiakini, claimed the video published by a news portal was shared with malicious intent and the aim is to tarnish his reputation.

He said the allegation that he received commissions or “kickbacks” is baseless defamation and made a police report.

Mohd Arsad said he had instructed his legal team to review all possible legal actions against individuals or parties who continue to disseminate false or distorted information about his statement. — Nov 16, 2024
