Maggi madness: Is Malaysia’s economy really that bad?

Is the Malaysian economy deteriorating to the point where Malaysian’s have to resort to eating maggi en-mass?

In a viral video on X by netizen Tok Perak, people could be seen lining up just to try a maggi noodle at Caltex, Setiawangsa.

Perhaps it was sarcasm when Tok Perak claimed that the people are now living a tough life, needing to make a beeline to eat maggi at the side of the road.

But looking at the price tag displayed at the food truck, most of the meals offered were around the RM8 to RM15 mark.

This is definitely not something the poor would want to incorporate into their everyday life.

Most likely, the beeline has everything to do with the popularity of the noodle.

Called Maggi Malam, the food truck offers maggi in a variety of ingredients from scrambled egg, crispy chicken, beef and even maggi special.

Some netizens could be observed expressing their confusion.

“Is this because they are poor or it is going viral because it is delicious? I see the price at RM10 in the video. I could be wrong,” said Paris Ashiqin.

𝐃𝐲𝐚𝐧 wondered if it was the fear of missing out or if the crowd was just plain hungry.

mandarin with byha suggested that maybe some people are lazy to cook but diligent at making payments.

“Like me, ayam gepuk is easy to cook. Just fry the chicken and smash the cillies. But I am not diligent, but diligent at taking out money and buying the complete meal to eat straight away,” said mandarin with byha.

Gajuspedas said this is among the silliest things he has seen.

“It is just maggi. If you are lazy to even cook maggi, I don’t know what level of laziness this is, and the price is exorbitant, then you also drink the boiled water which has not been changed for how long,” he said.

Then here is some food for thought from Fred.

Observing the video, we can conjecture that this is not about the Malaysian economy deteriorating although this doesn’t mean in anyway that the nation is perfect, in fact far from it.

Here is hungry crowd enjoying the blessings of living in a cornucopia of delicious meals that is Malaysia. They say free advertisement is the best advertisement. Maggi by the side of the road anyone? —Nov 10, 2024
