Mahathir wanted to sit with opposition, says Takiyuddin

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had made a written request to be seated among opposition MPs during the one-day sitting in Parliament on May 18, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.

In a tweet today, Takiyuddin said the choice of seats was dependent on the MPs themselves and their parties.

“I would like to confirm that my seat in Parliament will be in the bloc that does not support Perikatan Nasional (PN),” Mahathir wrote in his letter to Takiyuddin dated May 15. Bersatu president and Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin leads PN.

Mahathir, who is Langkawi MP, was expelled from the party he co-founded, Bersatu, yesterday for sitting in the opposition bloc.

The other four Bersatu MPs, aligned to Mahathir, and who also got the boot were former Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (Jerlun), Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muar), Dr Mazlee Malik (Simpang Renggam) and Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah (Kubang Pasu). – May 29, 2020
