Putrajaya to draft Covid-19 bill – finally

THE Cabinet has finally agreed to draft a temporary bill on Covid-19 relief measures, more than two months after the country had undergone the movement control order (MCO) on March 18 to deal with the pandemic.

The agreement to draft the bill was reached after the Cabinet met twice on April 29 and May 20, de facto Law Minister Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said in a statement today.

He said the purpose of the bill was to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the country and the public.

All government ministries have been asked to identify the relevant acts which need to be amended and a special committee headed by all the ministers will convene on May 28 to study the bill, Takiyuddin said.

“Items included in the bill must ensue from the pandemic and have an impact on businesses, SMEs and the rakyat generally,” he added. – May 22, 2020
